    Commander, Submarine Group Ten

KINGS BAY, Georgia – A Goodlettsville, Tenn. native assigned to the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) Gold Crew who was selected as the Commander, Submarine Forces Atlantic (COMSUBLANT) 2020 “Sea” Sailor of the Year (SOY) was pinned to the rank of chief petty officer during a ceremony held onboard Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay (NSB-KB), Georgia, Nov. 19.
Chief Electrician’s Mate (Nuclear) Matthew Golden was selected from a group of five SOY recipients from various COMSUBLANT commands who were finalists for the prestigious award.
“This has been a very humbling experience,” said Golden. “I work with a lot of great first classes that I definitely think deserve this so, to be chosen amongst them, has been really humbling for myself.”
The award meritoriously advanced Golden to the rank of chief petty officer however, he was not permitted to wear the insignia until completing the chief petty officer induction season.
Golden, along with all of the SOY finalists, was evaluated on job performance, contributions to command climate, peer group involvement, educational accomplishments, physical fitness standards and participation in community service activities.
“Any Sailor who earns their anchors has reached a major career milestone they should be proud of for the rest of their life,” said Command Master Chief Ed Rathgeber, the top enlisted leader for Commander, Submarine Group Ten, which is also located at NSB-KB. “Earning those anchors as a result of the COMSUBLANT SOY selection is all the more notable. I’m proud to welcome Chief Golden into the Chiefs Quarters and there is no doubt in my mind that his example will inspire other Sailors to work hard and continually raise the standard of performance.”
Golden has served in the Navy for more than 12 years and was selected while stationed aboard the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Alaska (SSBN 732) Blue Crew.
He said the mentorship he’s received throughout his career encouraged him to continue his naval service.
“I will continue to grow as a leader, and find out everything it means to take care of Sailors,” said Golden. “I have all the tools at my disposal to figure what I can do to help make them the best possible versions of themselves.”
His personal awards include five Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, as well as a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his selection as the COMSUBLANT Sea SOY.
The mission of the Submarine Force is to execute the Department of the Navy’s mission in and from the undersea domain. In addition to lending added capacity to naval forces, the Submarine Force, in particular, is expected to leverage those special advantages that come with undersea concealment to permit operational, deterrent and combat effects that the Navy and the nation could not otherwise achieve.
The Submarine Force and supporting organizations constitute the primary undersea arm of the Navy. Submarines and their crews remain the tip of the undersea spear.
