BAGHDAD— A Multi-National Division — Baghdad Soldier died from a vehicle rollover, Oct. 30, in the southeastern outskirts of Baghdad.
Pfc. Lukas C. Hopper, 20, of Merced, Calif., was an infantryman assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
Hopper enlisted in the Army in January 2008. He completed his one-station unit training and basic airborne school at Fort Benning, Ga.
He was serving in his first deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"The battalion lost a treasured and dedicated trooper with whom it was a privilege to serve along side," said Lt. Col. Dave Bair, commander of the 1st Bn., 505th PIR. "Pfc. Hopper's great sense of humor, devotion to his fellow Paratroopers, and his dedication to mission accomplishment set him apart from his peers. He will truly be missed."
His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.
"Pfc. Hopper was an outstanding Paratrooper. He was a dedicated professional who set the example for all to follow," said Capt. Travis J. Stellfox, Hopper's company commander. "His presence will be severely missed and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family."
He is survived by his mother and father.
The circumstances surrounding the event are under investigation.
