JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas – (Dec. 8, 2021) – Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio hosted senior leaders from Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) for a command briefing and tour, Dec. 8.

NMTSC’s commanding officer, executive officer, and command master chief were among the list of guests hosted by NAMRU San Antonio’s leadership, staff members, and research scientists. During the tour, scientists and researchers discussed advancements in medical research and practical applications for training new hospital corpsmen.

“We take concepts and turn them into products that can be used in the field,” said Capt. Gerald DeLong, NAMRU San Antonio’s commanding officer. “It is important to get the users [corpsmen] involved by getting their feedback. Having NMTSC close by helps us tremendously with creating both effective and practical products.”

During the tour of NAMRU San Antonio’s facilities at the Battlefield Health and Trauma (BHT) Research Institute and the Tri-Service Research Laboratory (TSRL), NMTSC leadership learned about the latest research projects and had the opportunity to give feedback regarding the practical uses of different products.

“Knowledge is gained from awareness”, said NMTSC Commanding Officer Capt. Ann Case. “Now that we are aware of some of the projects they [NAMRU-San Antonio] are working on, we can assist them by utilizing our staff members in assisting with processes and contributing to the various research projects. At the end of the day, we are impacting operational medicine and in turn, supporting the ready medical team.”

NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap-driven combat casualty care, craniofacial and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. It is one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy under the DoD and is one of eight subordinate research commands in the global network of laboratories operating under the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, Md.

NMTSC is the Navy component command providing administrative and operational control over Navy staff and students assigned to the METC and other medical programs in the San Antonio area.
