SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 15, 2021) – The Junior Enlisted Association (JEA) at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston completed an overhaul, update, and refresh of the Hospital Corpsman Memorial Wall at Anderson Hall, Dec. 9.
The Hospital Corpsman Memorial Wall displays 57 hospital corpsmen who were killed in action in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The centerpiece of the memorial honors Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Christopher Anderson, for which Anderson Hall is named.
“It’s important to recognize the sacrifice of these corpsmen and honor the history of our rate,” said Hospital Corspman 2nd Class William Peeler, an instructor with the Hospital Corpsman Basic program at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) and president of the JBSA-FSH JEA. “Everyday, thousands of students walk through those doors to learn what it means to be a corpsman. They walk past those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and they can take pride in what they’re learning here.”
The JEA worked on the project for approximately four months, ordering plaques, assembling picture frames and constructing the display. The JBSA-FSH First Class Petty Officers Association, Chiefs’ Mess, and the San Antonio Wardroom Association assisted with funding.
“The JEA did a pheonomenal job restoring the wall and honoring those who have fallen,” said Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Raulito Galgana, NMTSC’s command master chief. “It fills me with a great sense of pride to know that the Sailors here want to pay tribute to the fallen, while inspiring students to be proud of this rate.”
According to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery records, more than 2,000 U.S Navy enlisted medical personnel have been killed in action from Civil War- present day.
“Every single corpsman on that wall signed up, answered the call, and laid down their lives to save others,” said Peeler. “That’s what being a corpsman is all about. I may not have known any of those corpsman personally, but we all share a bond. Those are my brothers and sisters in arms.”
NMTSC is the Navy component command providing administrative and operational control over Navy staff and students assigned to the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) and other medical programs in the San Antonio area.
