SAN ANTONIO (Mar. 12, 2022) – Sailors assigned to Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) attended a Mind-Body Mental Fitness (MBMF) course hosted by the Naval Center for Combat and Operational Stress Control (NCCOSC) and Fleet and Family Support Programs (FFSP) from March 7-11.
The course was brought to NMTSC by the command’s Health Promotions and Wellness committee in coordination with the Warrior Optimization, Caregiver Operational Stress Control (CgOSC) and Command Resiliency Teams.
MBMF uses more than 30 years of data to enhance resiliency and mental toughness through the use of evidence-based mindfulness skills. The program provides a proactive pathway to mental toughness, which participants can apply in both their personal and professional lives.
“The MBMF techniques for mindfulness and problem solving help Sailors to become resilient in the aspect of stress,” said Lt. Cmdr. Ada Dee, division officer for in the Hospital Corpsman Basic Program at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC). “Its focus is to make our Sailors tougher. Teaching our staff how to work through stress as individuals and as leaders allows them to support, not only themselves, but also their junior Sailors and students.”
MBMF teaches stress resilience, mindfulness and meditation, living core values, flexibility, problem solving, and connection. Using these six session topics in combination with open discussion, Sailors are able to form additional skills to help cope with stress and build mental toughness.
“Having conversations about mental wellness for our staff and getting them to communicate their needs effectively is a big piece of how they can help the command,” said Dee. “By talking about it and giving people resilience tools, we can decrease the stress level, increase resilience and even decrease depression and suicidal ideations.”
Sailors attending the class received a MBMF trainer qualification. This qualification allows Sailors to teach the class to others, including their students, peers, and leadership. Sailors attending the class who are already MBMF qualified, instructed a portion of the class to become Master Trainer qualified. Master Trainers are then qualified to teach the class to others and have the authority to qualify additional MBMF trainers.
“I really enjoyed the course,” said Chief Electrician’s Mate Brandon Jones, Navy Military Training Instructor. “It [the course] gave me tools to help identify and handle stress in my life while also equipping me with the ability to pass that knowledge on to my Sailors. It also allowed us to gain a better perspective on situations instead of immediately reacting without first thinking the issue through.”
The MBMF class is offered bi-annually to staff members at NMTSC. For more information about stress management in the Navy, visit www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/Support-Services/21st-Century-Sailor/E-OSC/.
NMTSC is the Navy component command providing administrative and operational control over Navy staff and students assigned to the METC and other medical programs in the San Antonio area.
