SAN ANTONIO (May 12, 2022) – Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) Navy Nurse Corps officers celebrated the 114th Navy Nurse Corps Birthday with a cake-cutting ceremony at Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston, May 13.
Leading up to the event, San Antonio Navy Nurse Corps officers celebrated National Nurses Week, participating in multiple events tailored to build comraderie amongst the local nurses. Observed May 6-12 each year, National Nurses week honors Military Health System nurses’ unwavering commitment to their patients, and the value they provide to the unified medical team in accomplishing their military medical mission. This year’s theme was, “United in Service, Rooted in Strength.”
“This week of celebrating nurses isn’t just about nurses,” said Capt. Ann Case, commanding officer of NMTSC. “It’s about celebrating those before us who established this day to show nurses they are valued and honored. It also celebrates those next to us today, our partners in the mission, and those who will come behind us to take our place.”
The week-long celebration kicked off with the “Blessing of the Hands,” a time-honored tradition where the nurse’s hands are prayed over emphasizing the importance of physical touch in healing. Nurses also participated in a physical fitness event and a nurses appreciation breakfast.
“At the blessing of the hands ceremony this week, I wanted to pray for my team,” said Case. “The NMTSC Chaplains and I prayed for their souls, their minds, and their strength. We are united as a nurse corps, but also as an NMTSC team, a Navy team, and a military team. Together, we form a very dynamic unit and we each have a role to play. We are stronger as we work together, fulfilling the mission of building the Navy Medicine of tomorrow.”
There are more than 4,000 active duty and reserve nurses serving in the Navy Nurse Corps encompassing 17 different specialty areas. The nurses at NMTSC serve as commanding officer, executive officer, department heads, division officers and instructors.
“After 114 years of celebrating the Nurse Corps birthday and some of our most challenging years yet, it is more important than ever we celebrate the contributions our nurses make on a daily basis,” said Cmdr. James Ketzler, director for operations and chief nursing officer at NMTSC. “These contributions are being made at the bedside, in operational environments, and even at a place like NMTSC -- in an academic setting. I am proud to be serving alongside my nursing colleagues and very happy to celebrate with them during Nurses Week.”
NMTSC is the Navy component command providing administrative and operational control over Navy staff and students assigned to the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) and other medical programs in the San Antonio area.
