FORT CARSON, Colo. – Soldiers assigned to the 4th Sustainment Brigade (4th SB), 4th Infantry Division (4th Inf. Div.), participate in a Ruck for Leaders to educate and train on reporting procedures for sexual assault victims on July 22, 2022, at Iron Horse Park.
Col. Kevin Agness, Commander of the 4th SB, 4th Inf. Div., recognizes that leaders within the brigade were able to gain unique insights, precise steps, and effective strategies to transform the culture within their units, on and off the installation. It conveys how every leader has the responsibility to demonstrate and apply the Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) training.
“This training is vital because of the importance of understanding the procedures of SHARP and where every Soldier can go to seek help,” said Sgt. 1st Class Mathew Bates, a SHARP representative, attached to the 4th SB, 4th Inf. Div., Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC).
This SHARP training is conducted through a ruck with four separate check points and each Soldier is asked questions that are geared toward the Army Command Policy, AR 600-20.
“This is a re-training for the Soldiers within this Brigade,” said Agness. “From April to now, there has been a progression from Soldiers only understanding the SHARP program is important, but now leaders are learning to apply it. They are recognizing their individual responsibility to demonstrate and apply the knowledge learned from today's training.”
According to Command Sgt. Maj. Phillip Hollifield, of the 4th SB, 4th Inf. Div., today's event was about not only broadening leader’s knowledge on SHARP, but showing Soldiers that they are able to trust that their leaders know how to follow the proper procedures that need to be taken in cases that involve sexual assault victims.
“The Soldiers were shown the importance of getting the training right the first time,” said Hollifield. “All Soldiers need to have the right attitude, because you might not get a second chance.”
Agness said that this ruck was a great opportunity to get Soldiers out and exercising, while also giving them the opportunity to gain and retain knowledge that can allow them to be better leaders and build the trust of Soldiers junior to them.
“This turned out to be a great event,” said Agness. “Leaders were inspired, motivated, and eager to learn more. They realized trust is not only enforced at a subordinate level, but it is something required to be shown within every leader.”
On the Army Resiliency Directorate, it states that sexual assault and sexual harassment violate everything we stand for as Soldiers, and that it is our responsibility as one Army to take care of one another. This SHARP training is a way of enforcing this, and exhibiting what the Army stands for.
