FORT CARSON, Colo. – In the predawn hours of Aug. 11, 2022, Special Operations Forces Soldiers assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), gathered to honor all 24 Soldiers who had perished while serving with the battalion.
An 18-mile road march was conducted in their distinction followed by the dedication of the battalion operations facility to Sgt. 1st Class Will Lindsay, a Special Forces intelligence sergeant who died March 22, 2019, during combat operations in Kunduz, Afghanistan.
“Think about our brothers and sisters who have fallen along the way,” said Lt. Col. Matthew J. Mesko, commander, 2nd Bn., 10th SFG(A), before starting the road march. “Eighteen miles is a long way [to go]; You could walk alone for a little bit, enjoy the solitude, watch the sunrise…[or] you can go faster and harder to find that little bit of pain and suffering that can help you connect with those who’ve sacrificed before you.”
Along the route were stops dedicated to remembering each of the battalion’s Fallen.
“Remember those with [whom] we served and tell their stories,” he continued. “Remember their [sacrifice] while you walk and, along the way, learn something about our legacy and the people who served in this battalion.”
The battalion operations facility was memorialized in Lindsay’s honor during a ceremony attended by his Family and friends after the road march.
“I would like to describe Will Lindsay; the Soldier, father, and friend,” said a Special Forces sergeant major who served alongside Lindsay. “Will, with minimal guidance, [would routinely] take on matters to improve the mission and provide warfighters with the resources his [specialty as a weapons sergeant] demanded.”
Lindsay deployed seven times during his 15 years of service; five deployments to Iraq, one to Tajikistan in support of a counter-narcotics mission, and one to Afghanistan. Nonetheless, after all the hard work Lindsay put into preparing for the next combat mission, he and his friends would always find time to do something enjoyable like skiing.
“Following his wedding, he took his [domestic] responsibilities head-on and became one of the best husbands and proudest fathers I’ve ever met,” the sergeant major said. “The birth of every one of his four daughters greatly added to his growth as a person and as a Soldier.”
The sergeant major spoke of Lindsay as a friend, and said he had the satisfaction as his senior to watch him grow within Special Forces.
“Will Lindsay's legacy—as well as every Soldier’s legacy honored on the walls of this compound—gives us the “why” we serve,” he continued. “As you walk through the doors of [Lindsay Hall], remember their legacy and strive to be worthy of their sacrifice.”
