FORT CARSON, Colo. – Better Opportunities For Single Soldiers is an Army wide program that allows the voice of single Soldiers to be heard, and aims to improve their quality of life, community service, recreation and leisure spanning throughout the year.
According to the Army ‘Morale, Welfare and Recreation’ website, the B.O.S.S. program supports single Soldiers and helps to improve overall Soldier readiness. B.O.S.S. advocates for single Soldiers by trying to advance the quality of life throughout the installation by communicating concerns to senior leaders on post and throughout the Army.
“I love being able to help all of the Soldiers,” said Staff Sgt. Gover Hurtado, B.O.S.S. president, assigned to the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Carson, 4th Infantry Division. “I’m so passionate about it, and being able to participate in the events really pumps me up.”
All of the B.O.S.S. representatives volunteer for their position and strive to uphold the three program pillars that it is based on. These pillars are to include, coordinating and participating in community service projects, organizing recreation and leisure activities and actively supporting the quality of life needs of single service members. The B.O.S.S. program slogan is ‘Let Your Voice be Heard,’ which refers to the foundation on which the program was built.
“This program was built, and is here to help the Soldiers who are stuck in the barracks,” said Hurtado. “We have all different types of fun activities and they really allow Soldiers to get outside and enjoy Colorado.”
B.O.S.S. offers events such as kayaking in the summer, camping in the fall, snowboarding in the winter and much more. These activities are offered to all single Soldiers on post at an affordable price.
“I’ve seen B.O.S.S. help a lot of Soldiers get out of the barracks,” said Spc. Bianca Nautch, a B.O.S.S. representative, assigned to the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Carson, 4th Infantry Division. “It helps Soldiers avoid depression and just falling into bad habits.”
On Sept. 16, B.O.S.S. hosted a team bonding activity with all of the representatives which allowed them to come together and work towards a common goal, using all of their expertise. This activity consisted of a difficult puzzle where clues were given to all participating groups.
“This team bonding activity allowed all of the B.O.S.S. representatives to get to know one another, and showed what the program is all about,” said Hurtado.
“There will be many more activities and events hosted by B.O.S.S., it’s just a matter of how many Soldiers are interested in showing up,” said Nautch. “We want to be able to keep doing different group activities such as obstacle courses or weight training competitions, but in order to do that, Soldiers need to be aware of these opportunities.”
The B.O.S.S. program helps all single Soldiers branch out and experience new things while also bonding with others. To participate in any future B.O.S.S. events Soldiers need to sign up in the B.O.S.S. building which is located on Fort Carson. Or, any interested Soldiers can visit the Army MWR B.O.S.S. official website, https://carson.armymwr.com/BOSS, for more information on upcoming events.
