The Top III Association of Prince Sultan Air Base, presented an award to an Airman who went above and beyond their normal duty tasks.
The Unsung Hero award recognizes up-and-coming leaders within the ranks of E5 and E6 who exemplify their service’s core values, often behind the scenes, inspiring others and contributing to improving customer service and the overall mission.
Tech. Sgt. Thomas Mitchell, an explosive ordnance disposal craftsman assigned to the 378th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron, influenced his flight through fundamental skills training, multiple education visits with different career fields around PSAB, and oversaw the execution of demo operations.
“To me, winning the unsung hero award means that my direct leadership is taking notice of the things my team is accomplishing,” said Mitchell. “None of the things that I've done to win this award were solo accomplishments. So I appreciate that my leadership was able to take notice of our hard work.”
His transformational leadership shined bright, after responding to suspect explosives, after which he mentored personnel from multiple squadrons on lessons learned, best practices in a suspect situation and how to manage risk to personnel and property.
“My favorite part of the military is traveling and meeting new people,” said Mitchell. “It's great to see the different perspectives of others in different positions all over, and I think it really builds character and helps you keep an open mind.”
Having only been at PSAB for two months, Mitchell has already advanced the 378th Air Expeditionary Wing’s readiness by providing advanced munitions damage analysis in the event of an attack and fostered host nation relations by planning the first U.S. Air Force lead EOD integration with the Royal Saudi Land Force.
“Tech Sgt. Thomas ‘Max’ Mitchell is an invaluable member of the team,” said Master Sgt. Thomas Johnson, the EOD flight chief assigned to the 378th ECES. “He most ardently mentors grows and develops his team both professionally and off duty. I look forward to where he takes our flight in the next four months.”
The Prince Sultan Air Base Top 3 Association is a group of senior non-commissioned officers devoted to helping the PSAB enlisted force.
Every month they present the Unsung Hero Award not just to thank Airmen for their hard work, but to encourage the enlisted force to hold firm their values and to be an example of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all that they do.
