GREAT LAKES, Ill. – Naval Station Great Lakes combined efforts with tenant commands showcasing naval culture to North Chicago Community High School Navy Junior Officers Reserve Training Corps (NJROTC), Oct. 11, 2022.
Sailors and personnel assigned to Surface Combat Systems Training Command Great Lakes (SCSTC GL); Surface Warfare Engineering School Command Great Lakes (SWESC GL); Assault Craft Unit One (ACU-1), Detachment Great Lakes and National Museum of the American Sailor (NMAS) shared naval heritage, operational procedures and tactics with the NJROTC cadets.
“This is my opportunity to pass it on,” said Instructor Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Ty-Chon E. Montemoiño, stationed with SWESC GL and a native of Carrollton, Georgia. “I’ve had multiple mentors, leaders who’ve guided me and shared their knowledge and expertise throughout my time in the Navy.”
SWESC GL had the cadets board and tour their Boatswain’s Mate school house flagship trainer, USS Whitehat. SCSTC GL gave the cadets hands-on simulation training with Voyage Management System in the Operations Specialist school house Virtual Training Lab. ACU-1 took cadets out in Lake Michigan aboard amphibious assault patrol crafts. NMAS educated the cadets on the storied legacy of tattoos in the U.S. Navy.
“This is an ongoing effort,” said Mass Communication Specialist Joseph E. Montemarano, a native of Bayville, New Jersey. “We’ve had 13 groups come through with the NJROTC program, Boy Scouts of America and other youth groups and local schools this summer. We’re close to impacting 1,000 future leaders.”
NJROTC focuses on citizenship development. Sharing culture and offering opportunities to youth while empowering cadets to make a plan for the future.
“We instill the concept of service before self,” said David W. Hart, NJROTC Program deputy director and operations manager. “Whether the cadets go on to serve in the public, non-profit or private sectors, we cultivate the understanding that there is always something bigger than themselves. NJROTC acts as a conduit for opportunities and scholarships. Whatever our cadets choose to do, we want them to have a plan.”
