Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III welcomed back Soldiers assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps following the completion of their deployment to Europe during an official visit to Fort Bragg, N.C., Nov 1.

The XVIII Airborne Corps headquarters has officially returned from Europe following a nine-month deployment where America’s Contingency Corps rapidly deployed to Germany in support of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and to assure our European Allies and partners. In February 2022, over 300 personnel from the Corps headquarters deployed from Fort Bragg to provide a Joint Task Force-capable headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany. Secretary Austin directed the rapid deployment as a response to a heightened security environment in Eastern Europe and to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank in response to Russian aggression.

The XVIII Airborne Corps’ mission was vital and ever-changing during its nine-month deployment helping bolster capabilities inside NATO’s eastern flank and evolving by serving as the centerpiece for the train-and-equip mission to support Ukraine in the defense of its nation.

Secretary Austin spoke with several Soldiers and thanked them and their Families for their dedication, service, and continued sacrifice to the nation. He, along with his wife, Mrs. Charlene Austin, hosted a spouse roundtable during the trip and acknowledged the continued sacrifices of our military families. They both thanked family members in attendance for the important role they play while their loved one are deployed overseas in defend of the nation and in support of our Allies.

The visit concluded with Secretary Austin presenting his challenge coin to select individuals who were recognized for their hard work during the Corps' deployment.
