While America celebrates Veterans Day on November 11th to honor those that fought in America’s wars, those in the United Kingdom celebrate November 11th as Remembrance Day to honor those that died in wars around the world. Remembrance Day marks the actual day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918.

Remembrance Day was hosted in Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center (BDSC) by Flt. Lt. Alex Drummond, BDSC’s United Kingdom Liaison Officer. In attendance for the ceremony were State Department personnel, Soldiers from the United Kingdom, Canada, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Soldiers from Joint Task Force Medical 374.

Flt. Lt. Alex Drummond read the exhortation for the ceremony by reading Laurence Binyon’s commemoration poem titled “The Fallen.” Written in 1914, to honor the many lives lost, the English poet penned these words:

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them."

Soldiers from Canada and the United Kingdom laid the traditional wreaths of poppies followed by two minutes of silence. The poppies are a symbol of the suffering and sacrifice the Soldiers gave on the battle fields. As the farms, fields and land inside France and Belgium were devastated by battle, the red poppies were the first plants to reappear in the sacred fields.

The Kohima Epitaph was read after the two minutes of silence. The epitaph is carved on the Memorial of the 2nd British Division in the cemetery of Kohima (North-East India). It reads:

'When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.' (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Michael Romero/released)
