Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Bethesda, Maryland (February 2, 2023) - In an ongoing effort to recognize the valuable roles of its nurses, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) celebrate the Army Nurse Corp’s (ANC) 122nd birthday, Feb. 2.

The event highlighted the history and contributions of ANC officers since its inception at the end of the Spanish-American war.

“The ANC birthday is the perfect opportunity to recognize the vital role of the ANC, past and present,” said U.S. Army Col. Wendy Woodall, WRNMMC’s Deputy Director for Nursing Services.

The celebration kicked off during morning colors, the presentation of the flags, led by both active duty and retired ANC officers.

Following morning colors, WRNMMC’s Chief Nurse Officer, U.S. Navy Capt. Jessica Beard hosted a cake-cutting ceremony with remarks from U.S. Army Col. (Ret.) Karen Gausman, as guest speaker.

Established in 1901, the Army Nurse Corps has served in combat and healthcare from WWII all the way to providing critical support of the International Task Force set up for the COVID-19 pandemic.
