INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana National Guard leadership develops opportunities to train their military engineers overseas in real-world environments on projects that have a direct and positive impact beyond their own communities.

The planning process began last year when the 219th Engineer Brigade’s leadership traveled to Niger and Slovakia to assess and discuss possible training opportunities for Indiana Guardsmen.

Training in vastly different geographic areas allows soldiers to exercise the skills they have gained from domestic missions and deployments in new, exciting projects while helping people across the globe.

“Working in different environments requires a fine tuning and refinement of our skills,” said Maj. Amy Hoover, 219th Engineer Brigade operations officer. “As we work in different soils and in different conditions, our soldiers are able to take that back to the workplace and become better engineers, better heavy equipment operators, better plumbers and better carpenters.”

Niger’s armed forces leadership seeks to train with engineers to improve infrastructure to assist their military fight the extreme terrorists in the region and replicate the success they have had training alongside Indiana National Guard medical and logistics teams.

However, training in Slovakia would focus on improving the current infrastructure and living quarters of active duty, American soldiers stationed in the country. Additionally, Hoosier Guardsmen would participate in peer-to-peer, real-life training alongside Slovakia’s military engineers.

Training overseas in a wide range of scenarios and environments helps the Indiana National Guard continue to develop as a proficient, modern fighting force that can operate successfully wherever the mission takes them.

The Indiana National Guard’s relationship with Niger and Slovakia is a result of the State Partnership Program. This 30-year-old National Guard Bureau initiative includes more than 95 partner-nations and is a key U.S. security cooperation tool that facilitates collaboration across all aspects of civil-military affairs.
