WACO, Texas — Magnolia at the Silos beckons guests to “stay a while,” and the setting compels you to do just that.

Located about an hour north of Fort Hood, the location opened in October 2015 and quickly became a local staple, largely due to its proprietors, Chip and Joanna Gaines of the popular home remodeling show “Fixer Upper.”

The couple is known for creating extraordinary spaces throughout the city and Magnolia is no exception. The location is reminiscent of a quaint little town, complete with a market, furniture stores, boutiques, a bakery, a coffee shop, food trucks and even a ballpark, right in the middle of downtown Waco.

After hearing rave reviews about the baked goods, my friend Chandra and I knew our first stop would be the Silos Baking Co. Unfortunately, the line was wrapped around the small, but charming, building. A placard located in front explained that the structure is over a century old and used to be a flower shop where Chip bought flowers for Joanna. Each building had a placard that provided a brief history of its origin, which I really enjoyed.

I was curious to find out more about the large structures that are the namesake of the venue. Completed in 1950, the 120 foot tall silos served as storage for the Brazos Valley Cotton Company. Despite an F5 tornado causing irreparable damage to the downtown area in 1953, the silos still serve as a prominent Waco landmark.

The outdoor space provided an open feel, but still offered an intimate and cozy atmosphere. Adjacent to the area was a semi-covered seating area with food trucks that lined the perimeter. Patrons could choose from an array of offerings like gourmet grilled cheese, pizza, burgers and chicken and waffles. We were in the mood for sweet and savory, so we opted for chicken and waffles from Wafflechic.

After an amazing lunch, we strolled past the Katy Ballpark and perused furniture and home goods that reflected the famous couple’s country chic style at Magnolia Market and Magnolia Home. We visited the Old Church and stopped to take a few fun selfies.

Magnolia at the Silos was an experience unlike any other and you’re sure to want to stay a while.
