Fort Stewart, GA – Faith in the bible refers to a belief or trust in God, although you may not be able to see it, you can feel it. Faith is an important theme throughout the bible. Vacation Bible School is a three day program that is offered every summer to help grow faith and spiritual growth into the community. The Third Infantry Division Parents, children and volunteers came together at the Fort Stewart Marne Chapel, June 7-9, 2023 during a Vacation Bible School. VBS is usually a themed event for children to be more engaged and creates cohesion or reinforce lessons being taught in the program.

“Vacation Bible School is one of the Religious Support Office programs to support the spiritual formation, growth and readiness of 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers and their families ,” said Jaime Crawford, Fort Stewart’s director of religious education. “All their efforts and talents amplify these programs making them memorable and worthwhile for all involved.”

The program offers crafts, bible stories, singing and dancing, and all of it pertains to an end goal of spiritual formation. VBS provides a structured and safe environment for kids to grow in their faith.

“It’s important for these programs to continue, so when we have a community that resonates with faith, it provides us with an opportunity to grow and mature,” said Crawford. “It’s paramount for our community to feel safe with these faith-based, family-centric, and spiritually resiliency programs.”

VBS is a place where kids ages 5 to 12 can have fun learning about the bible while making lasting friendships within their community. It provides a way for children with a unique opportunity to learn about the bible in an engaging interactive way. The activities are designed to be age appropriate and are both fun and educational.

“Vacation Bible School is all about soul care, we get kids in here and we try to balance the mind, body and soul,” said Maj. Walter Frye, 3rd ID garrison plans and operations chaplain. “With deployments going on right now, we really want to help moms and dads with their children.”

In addition to learning about the bible, VBS provides children with an opportunity to engage with others and build relationships. These relationships can have a long lasting impact on a child’s spiritual development, while creating a bond with leaders and other students as well as gain support within the church community.

“For the religious office, our volunteers are the backbone of the programs,” said Crawford. “Without them none of our programs really exist. They are a crucial part of this program to continue.”
Crawford says volunteers are the backbone of these events. Without them none of these programs would exist. The VBS program is a large-scale program that involves a lot of planning, preparation, and execution. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks such as, setting up decorations, leading crafts and activities, teaching Bible lessons, and providing snacks and meals. Volunteers consist of retirees, active duty Soldiers, and veterans. Active duty Soldiers must get approval from their chain of command.

The Religious Support Office offers a Norse Pagan group that starts June 15, 2023. They also offer programs for religions such as, catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Latter Day Saints, Protestant, and Ramadan. Hunter Army Airfield will also host a Vacation Bible School July 11-14, 2023. The Directors of Religious Support help provide facilities and provide the 3ID community with a safe space to practice their faith.
