Sacramento, Calif.—Navy Reserve Center (NRC) Sacramento held a change of command ceremony at the NRC, July 08, 2023. In the presence of NRC Sacramento staff, community leaders, family, and friends, Cmdr. Gregory L. Descovich relieved Cmdr. Ernest L. Miller III as commanding officer of NRC Sacramento.
Capt. Domitilo M. Pastorin Commander, Navy Reserve Region Readiness and Mobilization Command San Diego (REDCOM SD) thanked Miller for his leadership style and proactively enacting REDCOM San Diego’s vision for Navy selected reserve readiness and mobilization. “Thanks for setting the standard on the integration of all of your reservists with your active component commands,” said Pastorin. “We say one weekend. That's all you need to be here. For everything else, go to your active-duty command and be warfighting ready in your billet. Thank you for setting the standard.”
Pastorin further stated Miller’s leadership exemplified and inspired excellence. “So, when we're talking about somebody who's acting with courage, when we're talking about not only the challenges and issues the Sacramento team has faced, but how they overcame it, we're talking about inspiring your team to be able to excel with doing the best with what they have and how they have excelled at that. More importantly, your obsession with not just how the work gets done, but what the end results are as well. That's the kind of moral leadership you have presented.” said Pastorin.
At the conclusion of his remarks, Pastorin presented Miller with a Meritorious Service Medal, gold star in lieu of second award. Miller directed credit and thanks to NRC Sacramento Sailors and staff.
“I would like to thank everyone for the millions of dollars of annual training we executed, the thousands of medical records and reviews we completed over the last three years, dental providers for examining a couple hundred Sailors over the last three years,” said Miller. “I’d like to thank you for the hours of travel away from your family to answer the call of the nation and lastly the countless hours of training you completed.”
Miller will soon retire, and NRC Sacramento will be his last command.
After official orders were read and Descovich formally took command of NRC Sacramento he articulated his intent to Sailors. “We have the unique challenge of making ourselves ready for the fight not yet defined. We are challenged to make ourselves ready to support the fight across all domains throughout the globe,” said Descovich. “I am humble to join such an amazing command and am ready to get to work.”
NRC Sacramento’s mission is to generate mobilization readiness by providing administrative services, medical, and training support to Reserve Personnel in support of surge and operational requirements for the Navy and Marine Corps team and Joint Forces.
