Um Qasr, Iraq- Iraqi civilian construction workers from the Saja Trading Contracting Company based out of Basrah, Iraq, earned their certification from the American Welding Society in a ceremony at the naval base here Feb. 1.
West Construction Company, based in Alaska, trained the construction workers in welding while working on a pier and seawall project at Um Qasr Naval Base then sent their examination weld samples to a certification company in the U.S.
All eight of the construction workers met the stringent standards for fillet welds set by the AWS, earning their certificates. They will continue their employment on the $45 million pier and seawall project.
Brig. Gen. Maufaq from the Ministry of Defense and Commodore Wahid, Naval Base Umm Qasr commanding officer, attended the ceremony, and Rear Adm. J. Scott Jones from Coalition Naval Advisory Transition Team presented congratulatory letters to the newly-certified welders.
The new pier and seawall are scheduled for completion June 2010, and will provide the Iraqi Navy with critical operational capability to berth their current and future vessels, further supporting their vital defense mission in the area.
This significant event demonstrates that Iraq is not only building a more skilled and professional military, but it is also developing highly skilled tradesmen in the construction field, which will expand the economic and social development of Iraq.
