JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. – The 316th Wing Medical Group gathered to commemorate the 136th birthday of Maj. Gen. Malcolm Grow, the namesake of the Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center, Nov. 20.

The celebration featured distinguished visitors, such as Lt. Gen. Robert Miller, U.S. Air Force Surgeon General, Col. Todd Randolph, 316th Wing and installation commander, and Col. Robert Corby, 316th Wing Medical Group commander. Alongside leadership, Airmen shared pieces of Grow’s legacy, highlighting his accomplishments and endeavors.

Grow, serving as the first U.S. Air Force Surgeon General from July 1 to Nov. 30, 1949, earned accolades such as the Legion of Merit in 1943 for his work on combat crew body armor, subsequently earning awards like the John Jeffries Award in 1947, particularly for his contributions to research.

“Today as we celebrate Grow’s birthday, let us reflect on his remarkable achievements and the impact he has made on the Air Force and medical community,” said Corby. “His legacy serves as an inspiration to all of us, reminding us the importance of dedication, innovation, and compassion for our own lives and careers.”

Concluding the commemoration, participants paid tribute to the symbolic tradition of cake cutting by both the most senior and most junior enlisted member. Miller and Airman Lisscall Williams, 316th Surgical Operations Squadron, cut the cake together with Miller leading the sword in reference to a path of guidance and William's following as a reference to embracing his future career.

“You all have a lot to be proud of,” said Miller as he addressed the crowd. “What you do matters…thank you for making me proud as a surgeon general and having the pleasure to work with you!”
