The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officers who were involved in the search for a missing boater, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Porsha Griffin, were recognized by the Adjutant General, July 16.
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Van McCarty attended the SC DNR Region 1 monthly meeting at Greenwood State Park, expressing his gratitude by presenting coins and a letter of appreciation to the officers. The Deputy Adjutant General, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Jones, also attended the meeting and expressed his thanks.
Griffin, who was assigned to the 116th Tactical Installation Networking Enhanced Company, 228th Signal Brigade, went missing May 25 while tubing on Lake Greenwood with friends. Her remains were recovered after a week of intense searching by SC DNR.
“I knew the dedicated men and women of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources were going to do what needed to be done. You never stopped doing your job,” McCarty told the officers. “Just like in the military we say no soldier left behind; I know that was your mission.”
Prior to becoming the state’s 29th Adjutant General, McCarty served 24 years as a law enforcement officer with SC DNR before retiring.
Lt. Col. James Landrum, the lieutenant colonel over law enforcement for SC DNR, said having Maj. Gen. McCarty meet with the officers was appreciated.
“It shows a lot of gratitude. It shows a lot of coming together,” Landrum said. “We are two agencies, but we work the same and have the same fundamentals of protecting South Carolina.”
