FORT CAVAZOS, Texas - Nearing the time students return to school, the III Armored Corps invited the St. Stephens Episcopal School football team to spend the day with their Soldiers. On Aug. 13, 2024, the students were given a base-wide tour of the Army installation, the opportunity to speak with multiple military leaders, experience U.S. Army training and more at Fort Cavazos, Texas.

This back-to-school season, Soldiers here at Fort Cavazos partnered with the St. Stephens Episcopal School to allow their football team to experience what the Army offers after high school. During the all-day tour, the students were able to converse with U.S. Army Leaders about their experiences and how the Army has benefitted them and their careers.

“Today I had the opportunity to sit amongst a panel and talk with high school students about leadership, teamwork, camaraderie, and my experience in the Army,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Kresassidy McKinney, III Armored Corps Culinary Management Chief.“ I think this is important because it gives the students an outlook on different approaches you can take throughout your career and education and expectations of challenges they may face while they continue to grow up.”

Spc. Brandon Davis with the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment, explains this is not only a great opportunity for the high school students, but for the Soldiers here at Fort Cavazos as well.

“Having the students visit the horse detachment was also a great opportunity for us as Soldiers. It allowed us to inform the community of what we do here and improve public relations,” said Spc. Davis, 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment, Head of Supply. “Today we were able to support the Army’s recruitment efforts and make a lasting impact on the next generation of service members.”

St. Stephen's Episcopal School is a private coeducational preparatory boarding and day school located in Austin, Texas. Nearly 60 miles away from the installation, Fort Cavazos still welcomes the school as part of the surrounding community. After the tour, the students expressed their contentment with their experience and found the visit to Ft. Cavazos to be really fun. One of the students from St. Stephens stated that, "it was cool to experience so much of the Army and learn about how the military works." "I hope y’all do this again next year.”

Overall, this was a great way for III Corps and Ft. Cavazos to engage with the local community, but more importantly to show the next generation what it means to serve in the military and the US Army. (U.S. Army article by Sgt. Kyler Hembree)
