EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – An Air Force aerial networking capability currently being developed by the Department of the Air Force’s Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications and Battle Management’s DAF BATTLE NETWORK was tested during Emerald Flag 24-3, in October.
Phalanx Griffon is an aerial networking system of systems that provides advanced communications between tactical data links, as well as the ability to move data between different levels of security for those message sets, said Kyle Traver, aerial networking branch chief and lead program manager for Phalanx Griffon under the C3BM’s Advanced Battle Management System Division.
According to Traver, the demonstration showcased a reliable aerial networking architecture using a transfer cross domain solution to enable software defined networking, comms orchestration, and content routing across multiple levels. Additionally, this initial version is an open mission system-compliant, government owned implementation of a multi-link payload, which went from concept to flight in less than a year.
This Emerald Flag event was a kickstart to understanding capability needs for the Phalanx Griffon, and how to scale the solution in appropriate form factors going forward, Traver said.
“Phalanx Griffon enables us to get the right data to every platform where and when it needs to be,” Traver said. “It also extends to ABMS’s digital network, which is owned by Digital Infrastructure, our sister branch, to help inform the broader DAF BATTLE NETWORK and support CJADC2 (Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control) mission sets.”
C3BM delivers the DAF BATTLE NETWORK, an integrated system of systems connecting sensor, effector, and logistics systems providing better situational awareness, faster decisions, and decisive direction. In short, resilient decision advantage to the joint force.
“There are a ton of folks involved in bringing capabilities like Phalanx Griffon to the DAF BATTLE NETWORK, and I couldn't be prouder of the synergy across the service,” said Maj. Gen. Luke Cropsey, C3BM’s program executive officer. “It’s encouraging to see the team push boundaries and connect systems in ways never done before. This is exactly what we’ll need to win the next fight.”
Emerald Flag is a multi-domain large force test series led by the 96th Test Wing. It is designed to enable the next generation of data-driven decisions at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels and bring combat capability to warfighters at the speed of relevance.
The test events take advantage of the unique resources and expertise of the Emerald Coast test community and associate organizations to accomplish complex, integrated test. The focus is given to system-of-systems that support the Air Force’s operational imperatives, while still providing a venue for developmental programs and experimentation that can capitalize on shared resources, an operational environment, and early integration with other key programs, according to Lt. Col. Jacob Rohrbach, the director for Emerald Flag.
“The communication layer provided by Phalanx Griffin enabled the kill chain mission scenarios to be evaluated in an operationally representative architecture,” Rohrbach said.
