FORT RILEY, Kansas — Leadership transitioned within the Fort Riley Soldier Recovery Unit of Irwin Army Community Hospital Nov. 19 as LTC Yolanda Ahmad relinquished command to LTC Benjamin Peffer. The event was presided over by COL Laudino Castillo, the IACH commander.

In his opening remarks, COL Castillo reflected on LTC Ahmad’s significant impact. “LTC Ahmad has been a mentor and steadfast leader to the SRU’s 71 cadre and staff members,” said Castillo. “Her compassion and dedication have left an indelible mark on Soldiers and their families, guiding them through some of life’s most challenging transitions.”

He highlighted her advocacy for the Department of Defense Warrior Games, where SRU Soldiers earned 22 medals under her leadership, and her commitment to fostering strong relationships with Fort Riley and 1st Infantry Division leaders.

LTC Ahmad’s leadership extended beyond the gates of Fort Riley, particularly through her efforts to support non-resident Soldiers. “Her visits to Soldiers receiving care across the country demonstrated her unwavering belief that every Soldier matters,” Castillo noted. As LTC Ahmad moves on to her next assignment with the Southern European Task Force in Vicenza, Italy, Castillo praised her legacy, stating, “She leaves the SRU stronger, more connected, and better prepared for the future.”

During her remarks, LTC Ahmad reflected on her tenure, emphasizing the importance of leadership, trust, and perseverance. “I’ve always believed in meeting people where they are and helping them grow,” Ahmad said. “The SRU’s success stems from a team of dedicated professionals who pour their hearts into this mission daily. To the Soldiers in Recovery, know that you are never alone. Continue to persevere and believe in your ability to overcome any challenge.”

Addressing the incoming commander, Ahmad expressed confidence in LTC Peffer’s leadership. “You are prepared for this mission, and I know you will lead with distinction,” she said.

LTC Peffer, who brings over 18 years of experience as an Engineer Corps officer, thanked LTC Ahmad for her mentorship and vowed to uphold the unit’s high standards. “Command is a privilege,” Peffer remarked. “I am honored to take on this responsibility and will work to ensure every Soldier receives the care and support they need, whether returning to duty or transitioning to civilian life.”

As the ceremony concluded, COL Castillo welcomed LTC Peffer to the team, emphasizing the importance of the SRU’s mission. “The work here rebuilds lives and futures,” Castillo said. “We look forward to your leadership, vision, and the energy you will bring to this incredible mission.”

The Fort Riley SRU is one of 14 units located on military installations across the country whose goal is to transition Soldiers back to the force and/or to Veteran status through a comprehensive program of medical case management, professional development, and achievement of personal goals.
