AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Air National Guard recognized its most exceptional airmen during the state-level Outstanding Airman of the Year Awards ceremony on Jan. 12, 2025, at Camp Mabry. The annual event highlights the dedication, leadership, and accomplishments of enlisted and commissioned personnel who exemplify the Air Force’s core values.
The ceremony, a hallmark event for the Air National Guard, brought together senior leadership, peers, and family members to celebrate the achievements of airmen across the state. Distinguished guests, including Brigadier Gen. Andrew Camacho, Deputy Adjutant General of Texas - Air, attended to honor the award recipients and their contributions to the mission of the Texas Military Department.
The event is hosted by the Senior Enlisted Advisory Council, which is made up of senior non-commissioned officers from all three flying wings in Texas. The 136th Airlift Wing, the 147th Attack Wing, and the 149th Fighter Wing come together with Chief Master Sgt. Rose Maxie, Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Texas Air National Guard, to assist in the enlisted development and mentorship of the Texas ANG service members.
“This is the most exciting time of the year,” said Chief Master Sgt. Benny Bellvin, President of the SEAC. “We are all here for one thing and one thing only, and that is to celebrate our airmen.”
The board chooses five winners representing excellence in their respective categories from each wing in the Texas Air National Guard: Airman of the Year, Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, First Sergeant of the Year, and Junior Officer of the Year.
The 147th Attack Wing captured three of the five titles at OAY, including Senior Airman April Ruiz (Airman), Tech. Sgt. David Rios (NCO), and Capt. Kevin Kron (Jr. Officer). Each recipient was chosen for their exceptional performance, dedication to duty, and significant contributions to both their units and local communities, embodying the highest standards of the Texas Air National Guard.
In addition to honoring the winners, the event underscores the critical role teamwork and camaraderie play in the success of the Texas Air National Guard. Leaders hope the ceremony will inspire airmen at all levels to strive for excellence in their military and personal lives.
The Outstanding Airman of the Year Awards held at Camp Mabry is only a stepping stone for those recognized at the state level. Winners will advance to compete at regional and national levels, showcasing the best of what the Texas Air National Guard has to offer on a broader stage.
For many airmen, this event represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. It is not only a recognition of individual excellence but also a reminder of the collective mission shared by the members of the Texas Air National Guard: to serve and protect both their state and nation.
The 147th Attack Wing is proud of their airmen for their success at this year’s awards and have full support as they advance forward in the competition.
