Navy Rear Adm. Michael York, commander, Defense Logistics Agency Distribution, hosted a town hall focused on DLA Distribution’s priorities to enhance warfighter readiness at the organization’s headquarters in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, March 11.
York opened the town hall by recapping some of the team’s recent accomplishments and engagements across the organization. He also highlighted recent award recipients and employees selected for upcoming professional development opportunities.
Following employee recognition, York provided an overview of DLA Distribution’s Defense Organizational Climate Survey results. York provided areas for continued growth, such as teamwork and cohesion, and opportunities for improvement, such as reducing stress in the workplace.
“We are a learning organization, and we will celebrate areas of strength and focus on areas of improvement while learning from both,” York said. “Ultimately, this makes us more effective in accomplishing our mission of providing global storage and distribution services to enable warfighter readiness and lethality.”
York went on to highlight some current initiatives across DLA Distribution including the Warehouse Management System implementation, a modernization effort to improve warfighter support and lethality. WMS is currently deployed at 16 distribution centers with eight sites remaining. DLA Distribution San Joaquin, California, and DLA Distribution Europe will see WMS deployed in the upcoming months.
“We’re really excited about the rollout to the last couple of sites,” York said. “We continue to get better at the deployment with every site, and I want to thank the team that has worked diligently on deploying WMS.”
In addition to WMS, York also highlighted DLA Distribution’s other priorities directly tied to warfighter support. York emphasized the importance of network optimization that allows the command to take advantage of transportation velocity and reduce costs. He also underscored the importance of leaning into modernization initiatives to simplify processes, reduce costs and improve performance and readiness – bringing direct benefits and savings to DLA Distribution’s customers. York also highlighted the significance of audit readiness to demonstrate inventory accuracy across the organization.
“Through WMS we achieve better audit readiness. We can drive modernization efforts by way of a modernized IT backbone,” York said. “Our network optimization ensures the right material is in the right place to get to the warfighter as rapidly and effectively as possible.”
York also provided guidance on Executive Orders and policies that directly impact DLA Distribution’s mission.
“I want to make sure everybody feels confident about having all the necessary guidance, and I’ll continue to be as transparent as possible,” York said. “As always, DLA Distribution will continue to execute our critical mission supporting our warfighters. I appreciate your dedication and am extremely proud of the work we continue to accomplish.”
York concluded the town hall by answering questions from the workforce and expressing his gratitude toward the DLA Distribution team.
“Thank you for what you do each and every day,” York said. “Your impact on the mission success of our warfighters and whole of government partners is unmatched.”
