A new wooden display honoring excellence in noncommissioned officer leadership now stands in the Caserma Ederle Post Exchange — a symbol of legacy, commitment, and the continued impact of the Sergeant Morales Club across U.S. Army Europe and Africa.
Unveiled March 6, 2025 by members of the Sergeant Morales Club in Vicenza, the hand-carved display serves as both a tribute to the club’s storied history and a challenge to future noncommissioned officers to uphold its values. Among those who helped install it was Sgt. 1st Class Nicholas Potter, a military police noncommissioned officer with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, whose journey to the club reflects its core mission: to lead, to serve, and to raise the standard.
“I strive to be the best version of myself so I can give the best to others,” Potter said.
In 2019, while stationed in Vilseck, Germany, Potter responded within minutes to a serious traffic accident on post.
“Both drivers were seriously injured,” Potter said. “Because I was consistently monitoring the radio and the installation, I was able to get on scene quickly, assess the situation, provide first aid, call for medical support and keep traffic flowing.”
Potter emphasizes the unique responsibility that comes with his role. “You never know what someone’s next move will be when placed in an uncomfortable position. That’s why we must always be ready.”
That same focus on professionalism and poise under pressure is what the Sergeant Morales Club seeks in its members. Named for a legendary noncommissioned officer known for leading with compassion, high standards, and mentorship, the club recognizes noncommissioned officers who embody those same principles today.
“The selection process is rigorous,” Potter said. “You have to learn the biography of Sgt. Morales, actively volunteer with the club, and pass battalion, brigade, and division-level boards led by senior enlisted leaders.”
The payoff is more than a medallion or a title.
“To me, it means I’m charged with baring the standard — in and out of uniform,” Potter said. “If there’s ever a Soldier in need, I will be there.”
Now, with the new display proudly hung at the PX, that message is front and center for the Vicenza military community. To those who hope to one day join the ranks of the Sergeant Morales Club, Potter offers this advice: “Work hard. Sacrifice for the future. Anything is possible.”
The 173rd Airborne Brigade serves as the U.S. Army’s Contingency Response Force in Europe, postured to respond rapidly to crises across the United States European, African, and Central Command theaters. Stationed across Italy and Germany, the brigade consistently trains alongside NATO allies and partners, reinforcing collective defense and enhancing interoperability throughout the alliance.
