404 CA BN Arrives to Camp Santiago

    CAMP SANTIAGO, PUERTO RICO

    04.14.2024

    Story by Capt. Jose Robledo

    1st Mission Support Command

CAMP SANTIAGO, PR - The 404th Civil Affairs Battalion (CA BN), 352nd Civil Affairs Command (CACOM) arrived at Camp Santiago via Ponce Airfield to train on their mission essential tasks, including conduct expeditionary deployment operations, while also planning an airborne mission on Apr. 10th, 2025.

The 404 CA BN deployed to their training mission with support from the Delaware Air National Guard's 166th Air Wing departing from Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst, NJ and arriving to Ponce Airfield, PR.

The CA BN will use Camp Santiago Drop Zone and training area to simulate their real-world mission of supporting world-wide contingency operations, with scenarios into Latin America.

"A thorough cost and time analysis showed us that training at Camp Santiago was more fiscally sound than conducting similar operations stateside, even when compared to major military installations within a five-hour drive," said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Aaron Dombroski, the 404 CA BN commander. “Being able to move our unit to Camp Santiago demonstrates not only expeditionary deployment capabilities, but also the ability to exercise our mission essential tasks, plan and execute an airborne operation, and operate in an unknown and unimproved training areas and conditions."

The 352nd CACOM develops and maintains capable, combat-ready Civil Affairs units ready for mobilization and employment in large-scale combat operations (LSCO), security cooperation, crisis response, and contingency operations, in support of Army and Joint Force requirements.

The 404th CA BN, while supported by the 1st Mission Support Command throughout their exercise, deployed to train in an unknown venue to replicate an actual operational deployment. They note that the opportunity to tackle a novel mission will enhance their ability to plan complex operations, validate collective training, enhance survivability of their Soldiers, and provide the air team with a different drop zone and exercise to challenge their capabilities. They intend to conduct an airborne operation as a method of ingress into a semi permissive environment and conduct a follow-on mission.
