HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and civilians assigned to U.S. Special Operations Command South welcomed Navy Rear Adm. Thomas L. Brown II, who has assumed command of SOCSOUTH, based at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla., during a change of command ceremony, Sept. 17.
Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser, the combatant commander of U.S. Southern Command, presided over the change of command ceremony.
In his remarks, Fraser welcomed all distinguished guests in attendance, praised outgoing commander Army Brig. Gen. Hector E. Pagan, and hailed the accomplishments achieved under his command. Fraser acknowledged the following accomplishments: Increased security along the borders of partner-nations throughout the Western Hemisphere; the rapid response of Special Operations Forces following the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti; the hosting of Fuerzas Comando, an annual Special Operations skills competition with more than 20 participating nations; and over 210 deployments that focused on establishing partnerships with nations from the Caribbean, Central and South America.
“Our principle mission is to enhance partner-nation capability by helping others to help themselves and build regional partnerships,” said Pagan during his remarks.
During his speech, Pagan also thanked the men and women of SOCSOUTH for all their support throughout his two-year command.
“This day is about you, the men and women of SOCSOUTH, and I hope I have earned your respect. It was a privilege to serve with you,” added Pagan.
Pagan took command of SOCSOUTH in July of 2008. For him, this day marks over 30 years of military service as he is also retiring.
Before completing his closing remarks, Pagan welcomed Brown and his family to the SOCSOUTH organization and expressed to him that the members of SOCSOUTH stand ready to support him.
Brown was commissioned from the University of New Mexico and arrives at SOCSOUTH after serving as the deputy commander of Special Operations Command Europe. Brown is the first Naval officer to command SOCSOUTH in its 24-year history.
"I look forward to working with the service members of SOCSOUTH,” Brown said. “I’ve been nothing but impressed with the standard of this command.”
