JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq - Over 500 service members and civilian contractors took part in the Remembrance 5K memorial run. The event kicked off early in the morning at Holt Stadium, organized by the 36th Engineer Brigade in honor of the casualties of the November 5, 2009 Fort Hood shooting. The first 375 runners and 25 walkers that crossed the finish line received commemorative T-Shirts.
Sfc. Loren L. Miller, the 36th Engineer Brigade Equal Opportunity Advisor and the event coordinator said, "I feel truly privileged to have played a part in honoring the fallen and celebrating the resiliency and courage of the survivors. For the families left behind, I hope they see this event as proof that we'll never forget the ultimate price paid by their loved ones."
The mass shooting a year ago especially resonated with many soldiers in the 36th Engineer Brigade, as one of the unit’s subordinate battalions, the 20th Engineer Battalion, was at the SRP site that day preparing for their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. “Our Brigade was hit pretty hard that day we lost 4 soldiers and another 7 seriously wounded…” said Col. Kent D. Savre, 36th Engineer Brigade Commander.
The Fort Hood attack was not a Fort Hood incident, it was a cheap shot to all those who wear the uniform…," said Savre.
Capt. Sean Christopherson, Company Commander, HHC 36th Engineer Brigade was the first Fort Hood based Soldier to cross the finish line with a time of 20:32. He said, “Starting the day off with a run and bringing soldiers, airmen, Marines, sailors and civilian contractors together is a great way to remember those heroes.”
