FORT KNOX, Ky. – Gen. James D. Thurman, commanding general of U.S. Army Forces Command, visited the 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) Wednesday, Nov. 24, at the command’s headquarters on Fort Knox.
Gen. Thurman, the 18th commander of the Army’s largest command, visited the 3d ESC to receive updates from the unit on Army Force Generation management, upcoming unit missions, and the 3d ESC’s progressive training strategy.
Thurman said he was impressed by what he saw at the 3d ESC and looks forward to working with them in the future.
“Today, American soldiers like those of the 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) have never been better equipped and sustained,” said Thurman. “The Army’s mission is to fight and win our nation’s wars. In order to achieve this, our Soldiers must be mentally and physically tough, led by strong leaders, and trained under realistic full-spectrum conditions.”
Thurman said that the 3d ESC is living up to these goals while keeping focus on the basics of soldiering and leadership.
During his visit the 3d ESC, Gen. Thurman also administered the oath of office to Brig. Gen. Robin B. Akin, the 3d ESC’s commanding general.
Akin mentioned that she had not taken the oath of office since becoming a second lieutenant in 1982. Thurman said he was honored to administer the oath to Akin and said that he looked forward to her accomplishing great things as she continues her career.
As the FORSCOM commander, Gen. Thurman is responsible for the readiness and training of more than 750,000 soldiers on active-duty, Army National Guard and Army Reserve.
According to their website, the U.S. Army Forces Command trains, mobilizes, deploys, sustains, transforms and reconstitutes conventional forces, providing relevant and ready land power to combatant commanders worldwide in defense of the Nation both at home and abroad.
FORSCOM is the main provider of expeditionary, campaign-capable land forces to Combatant Commanders.
