Story by 1st Lt. Edwin Melendez

    36th Engineer Brigade

PATROL BASE HAMIYAH, Iraq - Who you know makes a difference in many aspects of our lives. It is most certainly applicable when it comes to responsive troop construction. The 36th Engineer Brigade is the only troop construction capability in Iraq. If soldiers are doing the work, they are wearing the Rugged Brigade Patch.

The 36th Engineer Brigade received an engineer work request to construct a general purpose building for the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment a neighbor from the Great place. The headquarters building for these two units face each other on Battalion Avenue. The request required the 36th Engineer Brigade to design a structure that would serve as a multi-purpose building for Crazyhorse Troop, 1/3 ACR. Lt. Col. Dongha Yi, 36th Engineer Brigade Technical Headquarters Section officer in charge said, “the medium wood frame 40 foot by 50 foot building will serve as a Chapel, MWR Facility, Briefing Area and DFAC.” The building was necessary to correct a negative life, health and safety situation where soldiers were eating out of an under sized facility with limited seating.

This was a truly a joint effort, Army designed and Air Force executed. Engineers from the 3rd ACR contributed as well. The Assault and Obstacle Platoon, 43rd Combat Engineer Company provided soldiers and equipment for all horizontal work, including establishing the final grade and spreading/compacting gravel prior to the construction. A joint team of Air Force and Army Engineers constructed the building in 16 days. Capt. Christopher L. Teke, OIC Construction Team-South, 467th Expeditionary Prime BEEF Squadron said, “we shattered all expectations on the overall timeline, as the project was finished 31 days ahead of the required schedule.

The building has already become the central location on base and a favorite for all soldiers. It was showcased during the ribbon cutting ceremony where the USO brought in the Cincinnati Bengals Cheerleaders to meet and greet the troops.
