OKINAWAN, Japan - A Poyner, Texas native was recently awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Lance Cpl. Jared M. Sackett received the award for exemplary performance as a night watch clerk in the Command Joint Operations Center for Joint Forces Land Component during Operation Tomodachi in mainland Japan.
Tomodachi is the name given by the Government of Japan to the U.S. humanitarian assistance and disaster relief effort there in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami which struck the region March 11. Tomodachi is Japanese for “friends.”
Sackett is currently serving as a personnel clerk with Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force here.
“It was a good experience to work with and help the Japanese when they were in a time of need,” said Sackett. “It felt good to be a part of something.”
He graduated from Bullard High School in Bullard, Texas in 2008 and is the son of Dwayne and Kelly Sackett of Poyner.
