PARAMARIBO, Suriname - Members of the South Dakota Army National Guard 235th Military Police Company will help train the Surinamese soldiers the basics of security force tactics as part of the New Horizons exercise.
New Horizons is a cooperative effort between the government of Suriname and the United States Southern Command that provides training opportunities for the U.S. military and Suriname while helping improve the quality of life for the local population.
“The training the U.S. provides us is something they don’t get in their infantry training,” said Maj. Sunny Gerdijk, operations officer of the Suriname army’s 33rd Infantry Battalion. “It’s valuable training for our young soldiers just starting out.”
The 235th began the instructional phase of security force tactics in the classroom by explaining the basics and importance of security. After the instructional phase is complete they will be put in training scenarios that include ID checks, entry control procedures and vehicle, personnel and building searches.
“This training will be a good experience,” said Maj. Lesley Nojodipo, G-3 for the Suriname army. “It will help us update our knowledge of new techniques and the latest information available.”
The 235th is scheduled for two-week rotations and is slated to last throughout the summer.
