    Members of the Fort Leonard Wood community gathered to render honors to Pfc. Matthew Joseph England June 17.

    England, age 22, of Gainesville, Mo., was a soldier in the U.S. Army serving in support of Operation New Dawn in Iraq. He died on June 8 of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in An Najaf Province, Iraq. England was assigned to Company M, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry, Fort Hood, Texas.

    Plane-side honors were conducted at the regional airfield on Fort Leonard Wood, followed by a motorcade from Fort Leonard Wood to the Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

    A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian Church in Gainesville, Mo. England will be the first soldier killed in action to be interred at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Leonard Wood.
