MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. -- More than 270 Marines from Marine Air Control Group 28 said farewell to their families and friends, Aug. 12, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point as they began their 7-month deployment to Afghanistan.
Throughout 2009, detachments of MACG-28 deployed to support both Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. Then when tragedy struck Haiti during February 2010 with a massive earthquake, MACG-28 provided a detachment in support of humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations (Joint Task Force Operation Unified Response).
A group of Marines from MACG-28 deployed as a replacement for Marines in Afghanistan for the past seven months.
“I hope to learn more about my job,” said Lance Cpl. Brandon S. Hill, an air traffic control navigation aid technician with Marine Air Control Squadron 2. “I am glad I’m getting to support the mission of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and the Marine Corps while deployed to Afghanistan.”
There were multiple units deploying under the MACG-28 banner to include MACS-2, 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Support Squadron 1, Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 28 and Marine Wing Communication Squadron 28.
The families of the Marines leaving had a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones before the Marines boarded a bus headed to the aerial point of embarkation.
