JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq — Sgt. Joe Slaughter, a human resource specialist and a paralegal specialist with 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry Regiment, 77th Sustainment Brigade, 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, a native of Lexington, Ky., is a man who likes to go by the book. Slaughter is also the assistant unit movement officer for the 149th Regiment.
Between his three day jobs with the 149th Regiment and being a senior in college working on a bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Kentucky at night, Slaughter really can’t help being constantly immersed in reading material.
Slaughter originally joined the Army straight out of high school in order to get his life on the right track, and has stuck with it ever since.
For Slaughter, it would seem his time in the Army has proven to be quite the adventure. During this time, Slaughter said he has enjoyed traveling to new places with a variety of people, including Germany in 2008 and 2010 with the Kentucky Judge Advocate General Corps. He is currently on an all-expenses-paid deployment to Iraq as part of the 149th Regiment.
Slaughter’s section supervisor, Sgt. 1st Class Terry Roark, said, “Slaughter is very knowledgeable about his jobs, which is something we definitely need on this deployment.”
And for a G.I. like Joe Slaughter who wears so many hats throughout his daily duties, knowing is half the battle.
