MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. -- After weeks of intense competition, eight Marines and sailors from Cherry Point were selected for the 2011 All-Marine men and women’s softball teams.

The two male competitors from Cherry Point will be representing their home installation on the All-Marine Men’s Softball Team, which will compete in the 2011 Men’s Armed Forces Softball Championship in Pensacola, Fla., Sept. 17-24.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Bobby C. Brown and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jonathan R. Cape are making their All-Marine debut after attending the camp twice.

“It is an honor, especially being in the Navy,” said Brown, the right-center fielder for the men’s team. “In the Navy it is my job, as a corpsman, to take care of Marines. Being able to compete and play alongside them is amazing.”

Cape, the first baseman for the men’s team said playing for the All-Marine team fulfills his desire to compete at the highest level attainable and benefits him, as a Marine, by nurturing his competitive nature. The other six Cherry Point members will compete on the All-Marine Women’s Softball Team part of the 2011 Women’s Armed Forces Championship, which is being held concurrently with the men’s championship.

“A strong love for the game drives me to be the best,” said Lance Cpl. Lauren C. Simms, who received her first All-Marine Team selection as the catcher for the women’s team.
“I love to play softball and being able to play for this organization is an amazing feeling.”

Both Capt. Dawn M. Reconnu, a four-time All-Marine select and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Tina M. Burt, a third-year All-Marine select, agreed their biggest hurdle to compete this season is staying healthy.

“I am in my thirties competing against women in their young twenties,” said Burt. “Being a Marine has helped me stay physically and mentally fit to compete at such a high level.”

The other three women joining Reconnu, Burt, and Simms from Cherry Point are Cpl. Jacquelyn M. Kanan, Cpl. Chantele M. Villalobos and Seaman Jamie A. McCormick.
