FORT BENNING, Ga. - With the onset of fall in southwest Georgia comes a spirit of giving to Kelley Hill, home of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.
During the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, soldiers and family members brought food donations to their respective battalions as part of a brigade-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive.
Following the collection period, battalions loaded up their donated food in vehicles to be weighed as part of the competition to see which battalion is the most giving this season.
After the scales settled, 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd HBCT, donated the most total weight with 3,600 pounds, just under 4 pounds per Panther soldier. But 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd HBCT, reigned supreme as the most giving battalion, with 2,800 pounds, or donations of nearly 5 pounds per Blackhawk soldier.
The impact of the event was visible as nearly 12,000 lbs., or almost six tons, of packaged food was gathered together at the Kelley Hill Chapel to be consolidated in to care packages bound for less-fortunate Sledgehammer families.
Brigade and battalion Family Readiness Support Assistants joined volunteers to package bundles of food for the families in need.
The giving on Kelley Hill was so generous that 2-69 Armor Regt. was able to donate Thanksgiving food to their community partners at Lumpkin, Ga., Nov. 23. The food was dispersed to needy families in the Lumpkin and Stewart County areas, just in time for Thanksgiving Day.
