CAMP CARROLL, South Korea – Almost 20 months after its groundbreaking ceremony, the 501st Sustainment Brigade officially unveiled the Champion’s Café to the Camp Carroll community during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 23, 2011.
The Champion’s Café replaces the smaller Crown Jewel DFAC that can no longer support the growing U.S. military community that works on and lives around Camp Carroll. The café is approximately 30,000 square feet, seats 448 people, and feeds up to 1,300 people during a 90-minute meal period.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commissioned the café which cost more than $13 million. The Republic of Korea Ministry of Defense funded the project.
Col. Darrell C. Duckworth, commander 501st Sustainment Brigade, said the ribbon cutting ceremony was a “catalyst” for many more important milestones at Camp Carroll.
"[Completion of this facility] brings to fruition the hard work completed by all parties involved to better accommodate the needs of our soldiers," said Duckworth.
Duckworth added that the completion of the project further solidifies the relationship between the U.S. military and Korean government. The colonel says the relationship is a part of the strongest alliance in the world.
Brig. Gen. Paul C. Hurley, commanding general 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, was the guest speaker for the event and he called the Champion’s Café the product of the close alliance between the U.S. and ROK government.
“The ROK government funded the construction of this facility and I would personally and on behalf of the soldiers of Area IV like to express my utmost appreciation,” said Hurley during his speech.
“This dining facility marks the next phase in our plan to make United States Army Garrison Daegu the station of choice on the Korean peninsula.”
Hurley said that by improving the level of service, convenience and comfort given to the soldiers and their families they could ensure that they continue to grow as a community and in doing so not only meet but also exceed expectations.
Capt. Ryu Kyu-seok, Ministry of National Defense-Defense Installations Agency, United States Forces Korea Construction Management Division chief, said that he was pleased to turn over the new DFAC to the soldiers who are far away from home.
"At this new facility I wish all the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers make many pleasant and happy memories," said Ryu.
