FORT CARSON, Colo. - Friends, family and soldiers of 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson welcomed the new 4th Inf. Div. chief of staff, Col. Bruce Antonia and his family to the Mountain Post during a welcome and farewell ceremony held at division headquarters building, Jan. 4.
Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson commanding general, hailed his incoming chief of staff Col. Bruce Antonia and bid farewell to outgoing chief of staff Col. Patrick Fetterman.
“The chief of staff is an invaluable and essential member of the command team,” said Anderson. “It’s an extremely complex and demanding position that requires the right person for the job.
“This division’s been extremely fortunate and privileged to have Lee (Fetterman) as its chief for the past two and a half years. He’s been a huge asset to this unit, installation and community,” he said.
Antonia assumed the responsibility as the 4th Infantry Division chief of staff after serving in a variety of leadership positions in his 22-year career, ranging from rifle platoon leader, rifle company commander, and brigade commander.
“You have my word that every day I will do what is required to take care of soldiers and families of the ‘Ironhorse’ division,” said Antonia.
Antonia joins the 4th Infantry Division staff after successfully completing his most recent assignment as brigade commander of 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Polk, La., from June 2009 - October 2011, including deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from October 2010 - October 2011.
Fetterman departs Fort Carson after two and a half years of service to the Mountain Post, relocating to Stuttgart, Germany to be the lead planner of U.S. European Command.
During the 4th Infantry Division’s most recent deployment, Fetterman’s integrity and unrelenting dedication attributed to the successful transfer of U.S. Division-North area of operations back to the people and government of Iraq, Anderson said.
Fetterman also took a moment to recognize those he had served with during his tenure at the Mountain Post.
“Thanks to all those with whom I worked with here at Fort Carson for making it enjoyable, meaningful work. It was truly my pleasure and honor to serve here and with each of you,” said Fetterman.
“Fortunately, as I leave now, you have the good fortune to get the Antonia’s as the new chief of staff team,” Fetterman told those in attendance.
“Welcome to the team and get ready for the ride of your life. We’ll make the most of each and every day, and we’ll have fun while doing it,” Anderson told his new chief of staff.
