WICHITA, Kan. – Inside a sprawling hangar on McConnell Air Force Base, soldiers and government officials from the Wichita area, including Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas’ 4th District, came together April 14 to recognize the creation of the Army Reserve’s newest sustainment command.

The 451st Expeditionary Sustainment Command was proudly established Sept. 16, 2011 at the Wichita Army Reserve Center near McConnell Air Force Base and brings a general officer command back to the community. The activation ceremony unveiled the unit colors of the 451st ESC and gave an opportunity for the commanding general to introduce himself and his unit.

“The 451st is another addition to the Army’s sustainment solution,” said Brig. Gen. Paul M. Benenati, commander of the 451st ESC. “We are a very versatile unit as part of the modular Army… as a headquarters element, we have to be prepared to provide the support services, the command and control, and the mission command for all the different types of units that will be assigned to us.”

Brig. Gen. Benenati also described the valuable contribution the 451st ESC is designed to make to U.S. military operations overseas.

“We have absolutely the best sustainment capability anywhere in the world,” stated Benenati. “We can take a fight anywhere need be, and units like the 451st provide all of the sustainment and life services to get the needed fuel, ammunition, food, and supplies to keep the soldiers engaged in their operations.”

The 451st ESC embodies the future of the Army Reserve’s mission command of sustainment operations. As an operational command post, the 451st ESC is responsible for planning, coordinating, synchronizing, monitoring and controlling operational-level sustainment operations in support of Army service component commands, joint task forces and joint forces commands during a deployment.

For the remainder of 2012, Brig. Gen. Benenati along with Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen M. Norris, the 451st ESC senior non-commissioned officer, will continue to lead the command in recruiting and training its headquarters personnel in order to become fully mission capable. In October, the 451st ESC is scheduled to take control of multiple Army Reserve units throughout the Midwest totaling more than 4,000 soldiers.
