GARNER, N.C. – Patriot Guard Riders, sporting leather vests, bushy beards and sunglasses dismounted motorcycles, and made their way through a crowded street into a tiny backyard in suburban Raleigh. Men, women and children of all ages united with the patriotic motorcycle riders to show support for the family of Lance Cpl. Jeffrey Webb at a flagpole installation and flag raising in his memory, June 3.
Webb, a Garner, N.C., native and designated marksman with 1st Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team Company, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, was killed during a training accident in Virginia in 2007.
Some of the attendees were family and friends of the Webbs; others were former service members and military supporters wanting to honor a fallen hero. All were grateful for the sacrifice Webb made for his country.
“It’s just about supporting the families, remembering the memory of the hero we lost and to ensure the community continues to be aware we have families such as the Webbs right in our own neighborhoods,” said Brian Adams, the North Carolina coordinator of Flags for Fallen Military and Patriot Guard Rider. “(We’re here) just mainly to let the families know that we haven’t forgotten and they’re really not alone.”
After a few brief moments of prayer and remembrance, Webb’s mother and father installed the flagpole and raised the flag. A bugle player played colors and all eyes gazed on the American flag as Webb’s father slowly raised it toward the sky.
Webb’s father took a moment to take in the sight of the new flagpole, towering proudly over the yard, before addressing the crowd, thanking everyone for their support.
“I am very honored, thankful and humbled you would take your time and would come out here to honor our son,” said Webb’s father. “Thank you and bless you.”
