ROCKLAND, Maine - Marines and sailors from 2nd Marine Logistics Group joined the crew of the USS San Antonio at the head of the The Big Parade at Maine’s 2012 Lobster Festival here, Aug. 4.
The Marines and sailors formed up beneath the August sun and unfurled their flags at the head of the long column. Approximately 100 sailors from the San Antonio and 30 Marines participated in the event.
“This is a reward for them,” said Capt. James Mackin, commander of troops for the festival’s Marine detachment. “They are some of the high performers selected for their hard work.”
The servicemembers were joined by marching bands, various float displays and the newly crowned Sea Goddess and Sea Princesses, beauty pageant contestants who visited the San Antonio the day before the parade. King Neptune himself took his place beside the Sea Goddess as they rode through the streets of Rockland.
Many of the area’s veterans stood to salute the formation as it made its way toward Harbor Park and the various Lobster Fest venues.
“I wear this hat all the time,” said Brett Jervis, a retired Marine captain who went to boot camp in 1968 as he pointed to his baseball cap bearing the Marines Corps’ emblem. “You go through lots of things, but you really don’t appreciate the Marine Corps until you’ve been out for five or six years.”
Jervis and many other veterans took active roles in the parade. A group of veterans from the Marine Corps League even formed up behind the Marines for the march through town.
