FORT LEE, Va. - The U.S. Army Forces Command hosted the 2012 Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit Rodeo competition, Aug. 12-24, for the Sergeant Major John C. Marigliano Award of Excellence. members of the active Army, National Guard and Reserve components participated in this year’s event.

Conceived by retired Sgt. Maj. Marigliano while conducting a unit level competition in 1997, the first ROWPU Rodeo competition was held in 1998 with the objective of training and educating water production teams, and fostering confidence and esprit de corps within liquid logistician units.

Phase-I of the ROWPU Rodeo began on the beach of Fort Story, Va. Seventeen teams with five members each competed, a significant increase from the six teams that competed in 2011.

“I have been coordinating this event for the last four years, and every year it gets bigger and better,” said Kenneth Madden, G-4 Alternant Task Monitor, U.S Army Forces Command. “These soldiers have worked hard to get here, and all of them are winners, there are no losers here.”

During the Phase-I portion, which ran Aug 12-17, soldiers were given an in- classroom, 100 question, open book exam. soldiers were allotted four hours to complete the examination process which tested their knowledge on the 3,000 Galloon Per Hour (GPH) ROWPU, Tactical Water Purification System (TWPS), Lightweight Water Purifier (LWP), Tactical Water Distribution System Student Handout and Tide Table 2011 High and Low Water Prediction. The examination was followed by a hands-on assessment of their abilities to properly prepare, maintain, and operate the 3,000 GPH ROWPU.

“ Most of the water you drink on deployments is ROWPU water. Many believe it’s private industry water. It doesn’t taste bad at all,” said Alvin Lee, G-4 Task Monitor, U.S Army Forces Command. “The military depends on these soldiers heavily. Without them, we could not sustain the war fighter. Water is very essential to the success of any mission.”

Only nine teams qualified to proceed on to Phase-II at Fort Lee, Va., Aug. 20-24. Phase-II of the competition consisted of soldiers displaying their expertise in the Lightweight Water Purifier (LWP), Tactical Water Purifications (TWPS) and a Water Reconnaissance lane. The nine teams were graded by Quartermaster instructors throughout the week.

The award ceremony was held, Aug 25, at the Fort Lee Regimental Club.

The 753rd Quartermaster Company, Greenbay, Wis., took home the first place trophy. Second place went to the 14th Quartermaster Company, Greensburg, Pa and Third place to the 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colo.

In attendance at the ceremony were Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4, U.S Army Forces Command, Brig. Gen. Gwen Bingham, retired Sgt. Maj. John C. Marigliano, and Sgt. Maj. Todd. F. Shippy, 23rd Quartermaster, 262nd Quartermaster Battalion, Petroleum and Water Department.

“The soldiers you see here today are the future of the Army’s liquid logisticians,” said O’Connor. “I want you to think ahead in the future, and keep two things in mind: the use of energy and how water will play a vital role in the coming years as a much needed resource.”
