Two Air National Guard units and one Air Force Reserve unit participated in an annual aerial firefighting exercise in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, North Carolina Forest Service and Cal Fire. C-130s from participating military units flew several training missions, May 6-10, 2019. The training consisted of aircraft pilots, crew, maintainers and other support staff practicing wildfire training drops in the southern Rocky Mountains, west of Colorado Springs. U.S. Forest Service pilots flew the lead, choosing the most effective area to have the following C-130s drop fire retardant. After several dry runs, C-130 Hercules aircraft drop water.
