Fushimi Inari Taisha has a 1,300 year-old history that dates back to 711 when the Inari Okami deity was first enshrined on Mount Inariyama. Inari Okami was originally the deity of bountiful harvests, but is now worshipped as the deity of food – which in turn means the deity that provides people with the food, clothing, and housing necessary for life. Let’s Go! visit Mount Inariyama, on the Eastern side of Kyoto, to see the birthplace of Inari Shintoism and the world-famous Thousand Torii Gates!
