Nearly two centuries ago, in 1824, Congress mandated one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers primary missions: to maintain and improve maritime channels and harbors. The Corps started out with a focus on the Ohio and Mississippi River systems and several East Coast ports.

Over time and as the nation grew, the Corps became the responsible agency for 12,000 miles of inland waterways, 235 locks, 300 commercial harbors, and 600 smaller harbors to date.

Here in the San Francisco District, we oversee dredging operations at 10 commercial harbors and 19 smaller harbors. This maintenance consists of dredging channels and harbors to remove built-up sediment to return channels to authorized or regulatory depths. This provides safe, reliable, and efficient channels, harbors, and waterways for moving commerce, strengthening national security needs, and providing recreation.
