Forest Light is a semiannual bilateral training exercise with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force designed to enhance military partnership, strengthen regional security agreements and improve individual and unit-level skills in a bilateral environment. Paustenbaugh is the Commanding Officer for Combat Assault Battalion and Kang and Guo are interpreters with the battalion. The Marines and sailors are with Combat Assault Battalion and 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. Both are with 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. 2nd Bn., 3rd Marines, is deployed to Okinawa under the unit deployment program.
