The events of Sept. 11, 2001, were another defining moment in American history. When terrorists hijacked commercial planes to crash into the World Trade Center towers in New York followed by an attack at the Pentagon and a crash in a field in Pennsylvania, the military realized that a new era of warfare had begun. Operation Noble Eagle began on September 11, 2001, to defend the United States air space. Initiated by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, Operation Noble Eagle included air patrols over and around cities and the mobilization of thousands of National Guard and Reserve troops to perform security missions on military installations, airports and other potential targets such as bridges, as well as Canadian Air Forces providing defense of the northern border of North America. Aircraft such as the F-15, F-16 and F-22 were used to patrol the skies. You will see examples of an F-15 and F-16 in the Cold War Gallery and be sure to notice an example of an F-22 as you go back to the Modern Flight Gallery.
